Holiness of life

RE your interview with Brenda Maddox (April 19) How Catholics are derided about contraception. Yet the church is resolute in teaching that contraception is unholy. As St Paul wrote to the Corinthians "surely you know that your bodies are the shrines of the Holy Spirit who dwells in you". The church knows the dangers to which contraception seems so obvious an answer, dangers such as too many or too frequent children for the health of the mother, too many for the parents to afford to bring up properly etc. The church is, however, convinced that the dangers must not be removed at the expense of holiness.
