Nurse ordered to remove crucifix

A CHRISTIAN NURSE has said that she was discriminated against after facing disciplinary action when she refused to remove her crucifix.

Shirley Chaplin, a nurse at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS trust hospital, was told that she would either be forced to leave her job or face redeployment in an administrative department of her hospital if she continued to wear the crucifix.

The 54-year-old grandmother said that she had worn a crucifix since she studied to become a nurse almost 30 years ago.

Although the Trust has said its reasons for asking her to remove her crucifix relates to health and safety, Mrs Chaplin said she had been “bullied and victimised” because of her faith. On Tuesday she accepted an offer of redeployment and has instructed lawyers to file an action at the employment tribunal for discrimination.
