Derby church needs £50,000

THE MAYOR OF Derby, Councillor Sean Marshall, has helped to get off the ground a £50,000 fundraising appeal at St Joseph’s church in Derby. Fr Bill Naylor of St Joseph’s said: “We need this money to help us build a much needed hall to be used by members of the local community.” St Joseph’s has served the city centre, Normanton and Littleover areas for 50 years.

Religion media experts gather

A CONFERENCE ON “Religion and the News” will take place from October 11 and 13 at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor. Delegates include Jobeda Ali, Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari, Simon Barrow, Charlie Beckett, Zaki Cooper, Professor Malcolm Evans, Ruth Gledhill, Lord Harries, Imam Monawar Hussain, Christopher Landau, Dr Jolyon Mitchell, Catherine Pepinster, Professor Gurch Randhawa and Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain.

Leeds hosts lecture series

THE THIRD ANNUAL series of Leeds Cathedral Lectures, featuring a distinguished group of speakers, started on September 9 and featured Professor John Haldane on “Remembering the four last things: death, judgment, heaven and hell”.

On October 7 Canon John Redford speaks on “The Historical Jesus was God”, then on November 4, Fr Anthony Symondson SJ, will ask: “What has happened to our Catholic identity?”. Then on December 2 Professor Jonathan RileySmith addresses “Crusading and Catholicism”. Each lecture is given in Wheeler Hall adjoining the cathedral and begins at 7pm.

Scholarship scheme begins

ROEHAMPTON UNIVERSITY has launched the Roehampton University Sacred Heart Scholarship scheme which will provide an average of 10 new scholarships a year for postgraduate study at the university in south-west London.

The college was established in 1874 by the Society of the Sacred Heart and the aim of the scheme is to support academically excellent students in financial need. It is hoped that the scholarships will especially attract students from overseas.
