The Pope changes another prayer

THE Pope has changed the text of the Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart so that direct references to Jews and Moslems are completely eliminated.
The new text is published in the latest edition of the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, official organ of the Holy See. A representative of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary. which has jurisdiction over granting indulgences, said that the Pope had made the change "out of respect" towards other religions.
At the same time it was pointed out that Catholics will not cease to pray for those of non-Christian religions because the prayer is an act of consecration of the whole human race to Christ.
The decision, dated July 18, 1959, to alter this prayer comes only six months after the Papal decision that in the prayer for the Jews in the Good Friday liturgy, the word "perfidious" be dropped because of its derogatory implications.
The prayer the Pope has now changed was prescribed by Pope Leo XIII in 1899, when he consecrated all mankind to the Sacred Heart. It is recited on the last Sunday in October. the Feast of Christ the King.
The section omitted from the new text reads: "Be Thou King of all those who are still involved in the darkness of idolatry or of Islamism, and refuse not to draw them into the light and kingdom of God. Turn Thine eyes of mercy towards the children of that race, once Thy chosen people: of old they called down upon themselves the Blood of the Saviour; may It now descend upon them a laver of redemption and of love." The Indulgences attached to the recitation of the prayer remain the same.
Sold Cattle For Hospital
It took nearly all the cattle of the Santhuru and Turkana tribes to raise about f900 to start building a hospital at Baragoi, in the dry and barren north of Kenya. The Government contributed an equal amount, the villagers hewed stone under the guidance of Fr. Andreoni, a Consolata Father. and eventually the hospital was built — the only one in northern Kenya. The equipment and medicines were supplied by the United Nations Children's Fund. A nun came from Italy to take charge, assisted by two African orderlies and a Turkana girl, and the hospital now treats nearly 10,000 outpatients and about 1.500 in-patients a year. while special prenatal and posmatal clinics have been set up.
