The Rev. F. R. Freeland
It was in August last that the Rev. Francis Robert Freeland resigned the rectorship of St. Joseph's, Brighton, on account of ill-health. He was not destined to enjoy much time in retirement, and his former parishioners learned, to their grief, last Sunday, that his death had taken place at the presbytery in the early hours of that day. About a year ago Father Freeland suffered serious injury by a fall outside the church; he never properly regained his strength and was a sufferer until the end.
During part of the Great War, Father Freeland served as a Chaplain to the Forces, afterwards beginning his long connection with the church in Elm Grove. His association with Brighton included also a period during which he was curate at St. Mary Magdalen's.
The requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's on Wednesday last.
The funeral took place at Brighton in the presence of the Bishop of Southwark and a large number of the diocesan clergy.
