About face

example of thinking with the heart rather than the head is contained in an editorial leader in the paper I bought in Portland the other morning.

The leader-writer condemns Sir Anthony Eden for suggesting that the islands of Matsu and Quemoy should go to the Chinese Communists.

" The islands may be lost. eventually, but that is small excuse for turning them over as a gift." says the paper. There are many people here who express similar sentiments.

Yet cool reason would suggest that if, indeed, the islands are in any case likely to be lost in the end. it is surely better that we should put up a show of parting with them freely now. rather than being compelled to abandon them later on. with all Asia watching. That way we would lose both the islands and face as well, And the face is probably more important than the islands. But, 1 repeat. if Americans need some of our realism, we equally, would profit by sonic of their capacity for moral indignation.
