THE LATE MR. REED-LEWIS

SIR,--in your issue of April 5 you publish a letter from the Hon. Mrs. Bower in which it is stated that the late Mr. Reed-Lewis during the time that he was Honorary Secretary of the C.T.S. increased the membership from a few thousand to over 20.000.

Without wishing in any way to detract from Mr. Reed-Lewis's great achievements for the Catholic Truth Society, I would like to point out that the total number of members at the end of 1922 was 8,556; Mr. Reed Lewis resigned from the secretaryship early in 1923.

I mention this figure because the annual report of the C.T.S. for 1951 just issued points out that at December 31, 1951. the total number of members was 19,696. which is the highest figure that has ever been recorded.

T. H. Rittner. General Secretary. Catholic Truth Society, 38-40 Eccleston Square, S.W.1.

Explanation

SIR,-As I was responsible for the incorrect figure given by Mrs. Bower in her letter of appreciation of the late William Reed-Lewis's work for the C.T.S., published in your paper, I must apologise to her and to all those who had to take the trouble to write to you about the inaccuracy.
