Apostolic Delegate opens school
OVER E100,000 has been found by the Catholics of the Brentwood diocese for the Bishop Ward Secondary School which the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop O'Hara, opened last week at Dagenham.
The total cost was £175,000.
The school commemorates the first Bishop of Brentwood.,
The day began with Solemn Mass in the school hall, after which Bishop Beck blessed the classrooms, the practical rooms, the library and the gymnasium.
A chapel is to he built in the school-" with the blessing of the Ministry of Education." said the Bishop-and there is to be Mass every day.
The Mayor of Dagenham, Alderman Prendergast, gave a reception for the Apostolic Delegate and the Bishop. during which the Papal flag was flown from the flagstaff of the Civic Centre.
"1 he Bishop Ward School, said Bishop Beck at the opening ceremony, stands as a symbol of what the present generation of Catholics are seeking to achieve.
" We have been criticised in the past for having poor buildings, for having too many black-listed schools, for seeking to educate our children in unsatisfactory conditions.
Tradition
"Some of the criticism was true, hut it took no account of the immense sacrifices made by our forefathers in this country to produce even the inadequate buildings in which many generations of Catholics received ,their education."
The Bishop thanked the parents not only for their generosity and self-sacrifice but also " for being the fathers and mothers of the boys and girls who will set the tradition and standards for the future of this school."
Thanking the local education authority, he said, " It is true that we do not always see eye to eye, but that, after all, is to be expected. What is important is that we arc able to settle our differences of opinion in a spirit of friendliness arid co-operation."
To Archbishop O'Hara the Bishop said: " I need not say, Your Grace, that with your evocative name and your American citizenship, you are doubly welcome here to-night, especially, doubtless, by the clergy of St. Peter's.
" This is the first opportunity which we in this diocese have had of welcoming you as the personal representative of the Holy Father.
" We do so with sentiments of loyalty and devotion to the See of Peter, and to all for which the Papacy stands in the long and glorious Catholic tradition."
TWO MEMBERS of the London County Council, Councillor John Brannigan and Councillor Jeremiah Long, served at the Nuptial Mass at the Church of Our Lady Immaculate. Limehouse, at the wedding of Councillor Bartholomew Donovan to Miss Irene Palmer, of Limehouse. Among the congregation were the Mayor and Mayoress of Stepney and Mr. Walter Edwards, M.P.

All the officers and men. Catholics and non-Catholics alike, at Headquarters Allied Air Forces Central Europe were delighted when they heard that Fr. E. W. Daly had been awarded the O.B.E. in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
A senior officer said : " Fr. Daly must be one of the most popular chaplains in the service. His congregation here includes British, Canadians, French, Americans, Belgians and Dutch, and they all love him."
Fr. Daly comes from Mulligan and is a member of the English province of the Holy Ghost Fathers. He entered the R.A.F. in 1942 and has served in England, Germany, Belgium and France. He started Moral Leadership courses in Germany.
FR. WILFRID CARTER, parish priest since 1945, of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Hevitree, Exeter, celebrated his silver jubilee with a concert and presentation by the parish.
