' This Is My God: the , Jewish way of life, by Herman Wouk, Souvenir Press, £10.99. Wouk is best known, or course, for epic novels such as The Winds of War which have been turned into Hollywood mini-series. This book is very different in style and purpose: written in 1959, it is considered by many to be the best singlevolume introduction to Judaism. "There are many Jewish ways of life in this day and age," writes the author in the introduction. "But the departure point of all of them was and remains our ancient and living faith." Topics covered include the meanings of festivals and holy days, attitudes towards diet, and the difference between Orthodox,
Reform and Conservative Judaism.
Sacrament of Mercy: a spiritual and practical guide to Confession, by Thomas Weinandy OFM Cap.,St Paul's, £9.95. This book aims to make the experience of the sacrament of Reconciliation "more fruitful". After briefly reviewing its development through the centuries, Fr Weinandy presents various theological and pastoral aspects of the sacrament. Twenty-five scriptural reflections help the reader examine their life, and to acknowledge and repent of sin. The author is warden of Greyfriars Hall, Oxford and tutors and lectures in history and doctrine at Oxford University.
Faith and Culture in the Irish Context, edited by Eoin G Cassidy, Veritas £9.95. Based on a series of public lectures in Dublin, this volume aims to "situate the changes in Irish belief patterns in the context of the larger canvas of contemporary culture". Contributors include Bishop Donal Murray on the relationship of faith and culture, Christopher Whelan and Tony Fahey on religious change in Ireland during the 1980s, and Marguerite Corish on the secularisation of Irish society.
Communion Reflections for Sundays and Holy Days, Year B, by Donal Neary SJ, Veritas L5 .95 . Sometimes the Mass seems to end very suddenly, and a
reflection linking the readings and the Mass is greatly valued. This book, by a wellknown Jesuit author and retreat leader, provides poetic meditations which summarise the theme of the day's Scripture or feast.
The Road to Canterbury: a modern pilgrimage, by Shirley Du Boulay, Fount, £6.99. This is the record of the author's 130mile walk along the Pilgrim's Way from Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex, to the shrine of St Thomas Becket. In the course of her journey, much of which takes her through Home Counties suburbia, Shirley du Boulay reflects on the great age of pilgrimage and its relevance to life today.
