Grape escape

AFTER nearly 100 years there is to be no more Jesuit wine from California. The Society of Jesus has sold the company which owned the vineyards in Saratoga. After two had harvests the Jesuits are not in a position to continue running the vineyards which were originally acquired as a work for the novices of the Order.

Founder dies

DR Richard Barta, founder of the Austrian Catholic News Agency, zum Gedenken, died on January 1. He was the Editor in Chief from 1955-1980. In 1981 he retired and became the publisher. Cardinal Konig was one of many well known personalities at his funeral.

Presses halt

THE Ghanan Catholic weekly The Standard has been prohibited. The authorities said that the reason for stopping publication is that it had interfered with national reconciliation and unity and had been critical of the government.

Kennedy unpopular

SENATOR EDWARD Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, arrived in Santiago last Wednesday to meet with Chilean opposition and human rights leaders, and was blocked at the airport by right wing, pro-Pinochet demonstrators. The senator had to use a military police helicopter to flee from the egghurling crowd.
