The Nazis are tightening their grip on Holland. The independent spirit Ot the Netherlanders, and the excellence of their internal, social and religious organisations, has made the problem the more difficult, even if the more necessary, far the victors.
The flourishing Catholic life of Holland is now suffering severely. The following details were recently released by the Netherlands Government News Service.
The K.R.A. broadcasting concern, which was a wholly Catholic organisation, was taken over on New Year's Day by the Nazis and placed under their direct control. Prior to that date, and subsequent to the invasion of Holland, a Catholic direction held control. Whenever the Nazis themselves made an announcement, the Catholic direction prefaced it by warning listeners that they were not responsible for the announcement about to be broadcast.
At the present moment all four independent Dutch broadcasting concerns, which were reputed the best on the Continent, are in Nazi hands.
PAGAN EUGENICS
The Dutch people, already incensed at this commandeering of their voluntarily' supported radio station, have been roused to a pitch of indignation by a Nazi professor's expounding of the Nazi theory of Eugenics. He shocked Christian-minded listeners by his remarks that it was essential, in the interest of the Dutch nation, to prevent the reproduction of such as are not 100 per cent. fit. "All that is needed," he brazenly concluded, " is just a slight operation." All the Dutch Youth Groups, most of which are Catholic, including the Catholic sports clubs, have been disbanded. The Leader of the Dutch National Socialist Youth Party—the counterpart of thc Hitler Jugend—recently issued a decree that all other Dutch Youth Movements (and there are about 500) are forthwith to be absorbed Into the one National-Socialist Netherlands Movement. It will be recalled that the prime mover and leader of this National-Socialist effort is Mill the notorious Socialist demagogue, Mossert.
IRISH CATHOLIC PROFESSOR ARRESTED
From the same reliable source, though not officially confirmed, comes the news that in addition to the four previous arrests reported in this newspaper, the Irish Professor W. Doyle-Davidson, who held a chair in English language and literature at the Catholic University of Nymegen, has been arrested and sent to a German concentration camp.
Two of the four previously arrested professors are stated to have been released, but there is no confirmation of this.
