GAY rights activist Fr Bernard Lynch, who is originally from Ireland but now lives in New York, is to be the main speaker at a study day for Catholic clergy, religious and laypeople involved in ministering to homosexuals.
The day, which will be held in London on September 10, has been organised by the Catholic Caucus of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, an organisation which describes itself as "offering gay liberation to the church and Christ to the gay community".
It is believed to be the first ever event of its kind in Britain and will aim, according to Richard Kirker of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, to help lay the groundwork for an "adequate dialogue" between gay Catholics and the church hierarchy. "Fr Lynch believes that if the church is to minister it must listen to the gay community and respond to their call for complete acceptance within the life of the church," said Mr Kirker.
The study day will include two talks by Fr Lynch, entitled "Being Gay and Lesbian Ministers in the Roman Catholic Church" and "The gifts homosexual people offer to the church". There will also be discussions and workshops, and a "mass of celebration for the gift of sexuality". Mr Kirker said he hoped the day would help the church to recognise that its gay members had special insights into what it meant to be marginalised, since they themselves were often the victims of institutional marginalisation. "Their gift is to understand the experience of being marginalised, and often to work within marginalised communities," he said.
Fr Lynch, who was born in Ireland, is a member of the African Missions Society and worked in Zambia before going to the US. A prominent member of the American Catholic gay rights group Dignity, he is one of the church's best-known speakers on homosexual issues.
