ALAS I WAS ON HOLIDAY when Richard Ingrains gave his lecture to The Keys last month, but I was delighted to read the edited extract of his lecture on Malcolm Muggeridge (Catholic Herald, 9 July).
In the article Mr Ingrams writes that Malcolm Muggeridge gave all the royalties on Something Beautiful for God, his book about Mother Teresa, to her Order in Calcutta.
May I add a note on the same subject regarding Malcolm Muggeridge's contributions to the Catholic Herald?
Malcolm Muggeridge had lunch with me in July 1966, and I asked him to write an article for the Herald. He agreed, but said that he would not accept our fee. I told him that if he would not do so, we could not ask him again. He, therefore, agreed, but insisted that the fees should always be sent direct to a charity he would name.
Malcolm Muggeridge wrote many articles in the Catholic Herald. In the latter years of his life, the cheques invariably went to Mother Teresa.
Should Mr Ingrains wish to have a date when Malcolm Muggeridge became a vegetarian I can furnish it.
It was November 1967. He and his wife Kitty were coming to lunch, and, to the consternation of my wife, he telephoned in the morning to say he had become a vegetarian, but added, "don't worry — you did not!"
