THE POPE names 18 Cardinals, including Jozef Giemp of Warsaw, Jean-Marie Lustiger of Paris and Henri de Lubac, the theologian, but not Paul Marcinkus, the Vatican Banker. The Laity Commission produces an embarrassing report on how women feel slighted in the Church. The new Code of Canon Law is published.
THE CHURCH is falling to combat racism imaginatively, says the Catholic Commission for Racial Justice. There are few vocations to the priesthood because few understand the value of celibacy, says the Commission for Priestly Formation. Cardinal Hume gets a plastic hip. The Church of England fails to embrace unilateralism at its Synod.

TWO-THIRDS of Lithuania's priests sign a petition protesting against Soviet violations of religious freedom. The Pope visits El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, Raze and Ilaiti. A Catholic paper in Zimbabwe exposes massacres in Matabeleland. Malcolm Muggeridge is 80.
THE NEW Archbishop of Cardiff is named as John Aloysius Ward. The bishops of England and Wales announce their plans to abolish the commissions of their conference and agonise over the possible re-introduction of Friday abstinence. The Pope meets delegates from the British Council of Churches. Cardinal Hume's "serious misgivings" about Mgr Bruce Kent's role in CND are revealed.
THE BISHOPS warn the Warnock committee of horrors connected with genetic meddling. A Lithuanian priest is sentenced to seven years. Cardinal Giemp finalises the Pope's second visit to Poland. The Pro-Nuncio, Archbishop Helm annoys many by outspoken criticism of Mgr Kent.

BISHOP Agnellus Andrew resigns as Vatican Communications chief after three years. The Pope triumphantly tours his homeland. The new Anglican/Roman Catholic International Commission on church unity is launched. Mother Teresa is in hospital. Louis Jebb completes a 1,200 mile walk to Rome in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, Hilaire Benue. Up to 50,000 protest against abortion in London.

Sir Julian Hodge offers to buy an island for £1.5 million to establish a retreat centre. Malta's bishops resist a government plan to take over Church land. Gerry Fitt is made a peer. PROVIDENCE Row night hostel is saved from closure. Archbishop Mingo of Lusaka Is given a post In the Vatican tourism commission after 18 months observation In Rome. The Pope thanks Our Lady for his recovery in a visit to Lourdes. The Vatican denies a Liverpool policeman has permission to dress up as the Pope's double.
September THE POPE visits Austria. The Jesuits elect Fr Peter-Hans Koivenbach as their new General. A priest calls for the canonisation of Princess Grace of Monaco. A complete Anglican parish applies to Join the Catholic Church.

SIR KEITH Joseph surprises almost all by deciding to close De La Salle College, Manchester. The Rome Synod of Bishops on reconciliation opens. Sir Ralph Richardson and Cardinal Cooke of New York die. Lord Clark's conversion is posthumously revealed. Catholic schools are counselled to stop caning by the Catholic Education Council.

THE POPE calls for a re-evaluation of Luther. Mgr Bruce Kent addresses the Communist Party as his friends. Cardinal Hume outlines his qualified support of the deterrent. Mother Teresa gets the Order of Merit. The Vatican issues a Charter of Family Rights.
