Professional objectives

ONE CLUTCHES at every straw, however whispy, when it comes to the problem of unemployment. The other day, for example I heard, by pure chance, of a scheme which could be of interest to men and women without jobs who live within daily travelling distance of Croydon.
The Manpower Services Commission is sponsoring a new "Development Opportunity Programme" at Coombe Cliff Adult Education Centre, Coombe Road, Croydon during 1984.
The programme, which will have a monthly intake of up to 12 members (minimum age 25) will help participants to review their career and personal growth objectives and develop techniques for promoting themselves in the employment market.
There is no reason, in theory, why an independent team of counsellors should not approach the Manpower Services Commission in other parts of the country to launch simile' schemes. But those behind the Croydon experiment tell me that false hopes are raised if the whole matter is not approached with total expertise and professionalism from the word go. Mere good intentions are not enough.
