With the election of Mr. R. J. Mellish (Lab.) for the Rotherhithe division of Bermondsey with a majority of 4,400 over his Liberal

opponent and 5,500 over the Conservative, Labour retains the seat, and the number of Catholics in the House of Commons is increased to IR.

Mr. R. J. Mellish, who is 33 and an official of the Transport and General Workers' Union, began his education at St. Joseph's Schools, Deptford.
