Conference In Yugoslavia

Reconciliation Attempt

From Our Russian Correspondent

An important series of meetings is taking place at Karlovitz. Yugoslavia, between the hierarchs of the Russian refugee churches., under the presidency of Mgr. Varnava (Barnabas), the Yugoslav patriarch.

The aim of these conferences is to achieve the reconciliation of the groups in conflict, and a compromise is being attempted whereby, whilst retaining considerable autonomy, the three Russian dioceses of Western Europe, America, and the Far East would recognise the jurisdiction of the Karlovitz Synod, which may elect Mgr. Varnava as its president.

Fr. Bulgakov Condemned

The Renaissance reports that the Patriarchal Synod of Moscow. presided over by Metropolitan Sergius, has condemned the teaching upon the Divine Wisdom (Sophia) of Fr. Sergius Bulgakov, now pro.isor of the Russian theological institute in Paris, as heretical.

Thia decision has been forwarded by Metropolitan Sergius to the Karlovitz Synod and to .Patriarch Varnava with the hope that there also it will be condemned.

The Renaissance sees in this an intrigue of that section of the Russian church which is headed in Paris by Bishop Benjamin, acknowledging the jurisdiction of the Moscow patriarchate.

The Riga paper Segodnia reports that at a synod of the Latvian Orthodox Church, held on November 7, the desire was expressed that it should place itself under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople.
