"CONSTANT and tireless work" by Salvadoran Archbishop Arturo Rivera Damas in pursuit of a peaceful settlement to San Salvador's civil war is to be recognised by the Onassis Foundation who have nominated him and Amnesty International for the $100,000 Onassis Prize intended "for man and society".
The successor to murdered Archbishop Romero has been singled out by the foundation because of his dedication to human rights and social peace while attempting to negotiate a cease-fire between combatants in the country's civil war.
Archbishop Rivera Damas also recently received UNICEF's Maurice Pate Award on behalf of the Catholic Church in San Salvador for its efforts in support of peace and child survival.
