On Wednesday lest, Cardinal Griffin presided, preached and gave the absolutions at a Solemn Requiem Mass in Westminster Cathedral, for the repose of the souls of all Catholics of His Majesty's Forces who gave their lives in the war.
On Saturday last in Westminster Cathedral His Eminence Cardinal McGuigan celebrated Mass -for all three Canadian Services, Army, Air Force and Navy. Mgr. Beauchamp, Senior R.A.F. Chaplain, wits represented by Rev. T. II. Ellis.
While High Mass was in progress at St. Edward's, Kettering, on Sunday, a member of the congregation, Mr. Arthur Lawrence, aged 75, of Catesby Street, Kettering, collapsed and died. He was taken ill in the church and was carried to the porch where Extreme Unction was administered as soon as the seriousness of his illness became obvious.
In a flower-decked dispel, Solemn Vespers, on the eve of the anniversary, inaugurated the celebration of the eightieth birthday of St. Joseph's Missionary College, Mill Hill, this week. Solemn High Mass followed in the morning. The Society has to-Jay WO students in nine colleges in Europe and 700 priests working on nine missionfields.
The Papal Cross, Pro Ecclesia et Pooh/ice has been awarded to Mr. Edward Smith in recognition for his completing 65 years of duty as server at the altar of St. George's, Taunton.
The presentation was made by Mgr William Lee, Bishop of Clifton.
The annual service organised by the Gaelic League of London, was held on Sunday last (St Patrick's Day) at Corpus Christi Church, Maiden Lane, in the Strand, and was the best atendod for many years. The service, which was entirely in Irish, was conducted by the Rev John Cremin, of Surbiton. and the sermon was preached by the Rev. Patrick Crehan, of Lewisham.
Narrowly escaping death when a four-engined Lancaster bomber crashed into Templewood Catholic Nursing Home, set it afire and reduced it to rubble, Fr. Philip Darnley, 0.P., Chaplain to the nursing home, and Br. John, a Cistercian lay-brother, were the only inmates of the house when the accident occurred. Brother .John was removed to hospital suffering from burns and injuries.
On Sunday, March 17, the feast or St. Patrick, the Catholic officers and men of the First Battalion Irish Guards marched from Chelsea Barracks to the Brompton Oratory for Mass at 10 am.
There has been a " Chlidren's Mission " at St. Augustine's, Nottingham, this week, conducted by the Rev. Fr. Killiam Morgan. O.F.M. It is to be followed by a fortnight's mission for the grown-ups of the parish, with the Rev. Fr. J. J. Keating, Inst.C., as the Missioner.
