ARCHBISHOP Derek Worlock of Liverpool has appealed to leaders of the city and county council and the Department of the Environment to work towards finding a "negotiated settlement" to the problems of Merseyside.
Addressing the chairmen, chief executives, members and officers of Merseyside County Council and Liverpool City Council at a Civic Mass held in the Metropolitan Cathedral on February 10, the Archbishop spoke of the threat of reorganisation to local government structures.
Having spoken to many government officials, the Archbishop said he did not feel that "I have heard adequate reason advanced for the abolition of an Authority for which, save perhaps in two districts there is widespread support for its genuine accomplishments of the last few years and for its future planning".
