Sir,-Much of the blame for the blushes of Mr. B. p. Robinson must be laid upon the illiterates who compose the English of our prayer-books. One could go through the alphabet but the letter A would exhaust a whole page. Four examples only: Amubilis does not mean amiable, admirabilis does not mean admirable, assurnmio does not mean assumption and, vilest of all, appuritio does not mean apparition (a horrid idea) but simple', appearance.
Let any collector who wants two superb examples for his Chamber of Horrors just add the translations we are offered of the Te Deum and the Litany of Loretto.
The people who sell us mardandiee of this quality, however beautifully they print and bind it, should see their confessors.
Norman Lissimore.
Leeds.
