CHINESE REDS ARREST A PRELATE
Mgr. Dominic Desperben, Frenchborn Prefect Apostolic of Hainan Island, has been arrested by the Chinese Communists, according to a report in the Kung Shuang Daily, a Hong Kong paper.
Mgr. Desperben, a 54-year-old missionary of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, has been stationed on Hainan Island, off China's south coast, since 1926. He was named Prefect Apostolic in 1939.
Fr. Harold Travers, 52-year-old American Passionist missionary who had previously been held a prisoner for nearly 11 months, has been expelled from China and is now in Hong Kong.
He was one of the six Passionist missionaries under arrest in Yuanling diocese. The others are still imprisoned.
