To Provide "House Mothers" ?

compel," was the answer. No doubt Catholics will send their people 10 take the course of training we are offering at the end of which they will take a diploma. I understand that several members of one of the most famous Catholic Homes in.the Midlands have been attending lectures given by the National Children's Home and Orphanage—a Methodist organisation which, with Dr. Barnardo's Home at present runs Child Welfare courses. A Child Welfare certificate is awarded at the end of the course.
MANY CATHOLIC HOMES "We recognise that there is a big proportion of children in the Catholic institutions of the country. The war has added considerably to the number of children who have to spend their childhood in institutions of one sort or another. There are, for instance, 4,000 residual evacuees —children who have been evacuated to the country and then deserted by their parents. More than 'ever it is becOming important to thin out the
institutional idea in favour of the family group."
Training is to cover 14 months of which the first two will be a testing period in a Children's Home. Of the remaining twelve months, six will he devoted to the study of child development, household management, playing with children, care of health, social services and facilities. The remaining six months will be spent in practical training in a Children's Home at the end of which successful candidates will receive from the Council a National certifieate of Child Care.
Men are also included in the scheme and the course for them will be slightly different.
Qualified resident House Mothers will receive a minimum of £2 13s. for a 48-hour week.
The interim report recommends that a course in religious education should be available if desired, arranged, if possible. by agreement with the various religious denominations.
