WHY I REMAIN OUTSIDE THE CHURCH

Sta.—Some weeks, indeed by now, some months ago, you were tolerant enough to
entitled " Stop Baiting the Stalinists," and publish two letters over my signature, one the other, ° Stalin Avoids an Inconceivable Horror." Those letters came as an immoderate surprise to very many of my critics both on the far " Right " and the extreme "Left." They ante-dated the arrival of Rudolph Hess in hts abortive endeavour to exploit the campaign of the Church against Godlessness in acquiescent support of Hitler's crusade against the Soviets. They appeared some time before the reason for the respite of air attacks on Britain was revealed us preparation for
assault on Stalinism. They derived from art ever-up-to-date study of the science of war as practised by the supreme enemy of liberty across two eel-ethics, the Prussian and German Great General Staff.
The week-end that Winston Churchill declared his support for the Soviet Union 1 addressed a 'letter to you headed " Yes ! I Stand with Stalin 1" In the course of it administered so severe a drubbing to those who had let what I called their " insensate hatred of all criticism of private property " lead them into coursesfavourable to the aims of Hitler that you seem to have shied from publishing it.
Now, you were so rash some twelve months also, as to give prominence to is statement put iato circulation by the Star that I had " joined the Church." Personally. 1 do not know how. one " joins the Church." I asked for an immediate repudiation and an apology to—the Church. It did not eventuate. But it did not appear essential to inform your readers that, because I was receiving instruction in the doctrine of the Church, I had not of necessity received the call to make my personal submission to the Holy Father. Had not he and his predecessors from Pius IX in 1864 to Pius XI in 031 taken the line they did against Socialism and for the Latin concept of private property, it is 'extremely likely I should have been, by now, a communicant. But, though I have renounced my heresies as a Quaker, I have not the remotest intention of renouncing the economic and political concepts T share with Joseph Stalin. I am now. as for two decades, ,in all such
respects a Leninist. WALTON INIPW13OLD.
Motherwell.
rwe publish this letter shrce our readers way have been misled by our reprinting of the Star's report.—EIMTOtt, C.H.1
