Dominicans arrested in peace protests at bases

A DOMINICAN friar and sister were among those arrested over the weekend for their part in anti-nuclear protests organised by CND and Christian CND.

Religious services were held outside the Faslane nuclear submarine base in Scotland, the nuclear naval base at Portsmouth and the nuclear airbase at Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire. Protesters planted flowers outside the perimeter fences of the bases and decorated the fences themselves with flowers and crosses.

At Upper Heyford a handful of Christian CND activists managed to break through the perimeter fence next to the EF 111 fighter bomber hangars and paint "Father Forgive" on the perimeter road. Richard Finn OP and Barbara Eggleston, National Coordinator of Christian CND, were arrested and charged with criminal damage. They are to go to court on November 11.

Make Colette-Ludden OP and Anglican pastor Ros Hunt were also arrested but were released later without charges being pressed.

The weekend actions are intended to herald in CND's Autumn campaign to highlight nuclear deployment by air and sea. Sympathetic actions were held outside similar nuclear bases in Germany.
