Open Birkenhead Seamen's Centre
A large and well-equipped Apostleship of the Sea recreation centre for seamen, dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea, will be opened at Watson Street, Birkenhead, on Thursday next by the Bishop of Shrewsbury.
On June 3, 1941, the Rev. Hugh McHugh, B.A., came to Birkenhead from Si. Alban's, Macclesfield, to be the first full-time Apostleship of the Sea chaplain for all ports in Cheshire—the new centre is the result of his efforts.
The Centre includes a canteen— serving meals from 9.10 am. to 10 p.m.—a billiards room, dance Iran, concert roam, games room, library, and oratory. Dances will be held every evening, except Monday and Friday, when boxing tournaments will be staged.
The voluntary staff is drawn from the Legion'of Mary and the Guild of Our Lady Star of the Sea.
