A visit to the Vicar General

By ANTHONY WRIGHT

When you look into the. activities of Fr. G. Massicotte, you find that he is not only Vicar General to Bishop

Scheffer, 0.M.1., Vicar Apostolic of Labrador, but also dentist, notary, optician and lawyer.

Taking time out from the building of three churches, three rectories, two clinics and other structures, Fr. Massicotte extracted some 878 teeth in one year in this wilderness where the mail is delivered once a year.

He has also found time to fly several times across the 1.200 miles from one side of the 70.000 square mile vicariate to the other.

Bishop Scheffer's residence is on the north shore of the Gulf of the River St. Lawrence, his vicariate stretches across some of the richest timber and iron ore land -in the world to the sides of Hudson Strait.

At first the Bishop had only two priests to help him. There are 16 now hut a great increase will be needed if they are to cope with the influx, this summer. of some 10.000 workers expected to open up the rich Hollinger iron ore deposits centred on Grand Falls, Labrador. The deposits proved already show some 300,000.000 tons of high-grade ore.
