Wisdom 2: 12 17-20 James 3: 16 4: 3 Mark 9: 30-37 MARK's account of how Jesus handled the misguided ambitions of his disciples should encourage as well as enlighten us. Day and night they shared the company of Jesus. They had every opportunity to observe his actions and listen to his words. Yet they seem to have utterly failed to grasp what Jesus's life and message were really about. In squabbling over rank they displayed ambitions and desires that were all too human,
Surprisingly Jesus did not admonish them for their failure to understand his message. He simply took the opportunity to correct their mistaken vision of the new kingdom. His response was to stress the ideal of service. A "servant" had no alternative but to put himself at the disposal of others; he cannot claim any right in order to protect his interests. And that is the degree of service Jesus expects of his followers.
