Albania's plight prompts agency

ALBANIAN orphans and . families without enough food for the coming winter are to receive emergency supplies of food and medicines from CAFOD, the Catholic third . world development agency.

An initial grant of £7,500 sent to Caritas Italy by the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development will be used to help peasant farmers improve . agricultural production and set up vocational training projects. The British Red Cross also launched an appeal for Albania this week.

CAFOD said Caritas was committed to improving the lot of children in rural hospitals without even the most basic amenities.

"The severity of the crisis in Albania has stimulated many Catholic parishes to send spontaneous donations to CAFOD," said Cathy Corcoron, CAFOD's head of projects "We felt we had to respond to the level of suffering there," she said.
