Life returned to the ruins of Birkenhead Priory one evening last week when a pageant was staged there in aid of the fund (target £2.500) to replace a wooden staircase to the Scrip torium above. The priory is much neglected by visitors, as it is hidden by the huge shipyard cranes and other structures.
One hundred girls of St. Gregory's Comprehensive School, Kirkby, presented their version of the David Lord dance fantasy, "Sea Journey", in the Liverpool St. George's Hall last Saturday as the third Carnation Concert in memory of the late Sir Malcolm Sargent, who always wore a carnation in his buttonhole. The concerts are in aid of the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children.
Fr. Bonaventure Petrina, 0.A.R., has been appointed Vicar Provincial of the Order of Augustinian Recollects in England in place of Fr. Alexander Remircz. who has been appointed head of the Order's missions in the Philippines.
A programme of community hymn-singing was recorded in Elim Pentecostal Church, Woolwich. for the Greenwich Cablevision series "Your Song" which was transmitted on Sunday and Monday. More than 100 people took part, and the hymns were all chosen by residents of Woolwich, Plumsteud and Abbey Wood.
Two parishioners of Holy Trinity and St. Augustine of Canterbury at Baldock, Hertfordshire — Miss Evaline Fitzgerald and Mr. Jocelyn Millard — are being presented today with Bene Merenii medals by Bishop Butler, Auxiliary of Westminster.
The Benedictine Community of Worth Abbey in Sussex has re-elected Dom Victor Farwell for a further eight years' term of office. Abbot Victor was Coventual Prior from 1957, when Worth became an independent monastery. until 1965, and Abbot from 1965. He has been Abbot President of the English Benedictine Congregation since 1967.
The mission "Good News for Rugby," which ended on July 8, made contact with nearly all of' the 60,000 inhabitants of the area. During the second phase, "Outreach," the team from Movement for World Evangelisation, led by Mr. John Blanchard, its Director of Evangelism, spoke to 9,000 children in Rugby schools and a full house in the town hall every night for 12 days.
The new Rector of Upholland College is Fr. William Dalton, 47, who teaches theology there. He first trained for the priesthood at the English College, Lisbon, and was ordained at Upholland in 1949. He taught at Upholland until 1955, when he moved to Notre Dame University, Indiana, staying there until his return to Upholland in 1967. He succeeds the late Mr. Thomas Worden who died six weeks ago.
The Anglican Diocese of Natal has decided to pay its black and white clergymen equal salaries from next year —seven years earlier than planned. Announcing the move, Bishop Vernon Inman, said it was likely to cost the Diocese an extra £23,000 a year.
