St. PETER'S BOMB SITE

Increased security precautions
are in force at Si. Peter's Basilica following last Saturday's bomb explosion which caused widespread consternation but little damage. No-one was hurt. The explosion, which occurred 70 minutes after the Basilica was closed for the day, was confined to the marble pedestal of the statue of Pope Clement X, shown above. Marble splinters scratched a nearby organ but have not affected its sound. Vatican sources believe the bomb was set by a mentally der anged person. The last time a bomb was placed in St. Peter's was during a Holy Year celebration in 1950
the bomb did not explode.
Through the Wall
Permission to cross the Berlin wall to celebrate his first Mass in his home parish in West Berlin has been granted to a new priest by the Communist authorities in East Berlin. Earlier, the priest's parents had been denied permission to cross from West Berlin to attend the ordination of their son and six others at the Erfurt Seminary in East Germany.
