THE Church is growing rapidly in the diocese of Nyeri, Kenya, where the Mau-Mau movement was strong a few years ago, stated Bishop Cavallera of Nyeri last week.
Twenty-two thousand people were baptised this year, said the Bishop, and 52,000 are under instruction. The Catholic population of the diocese is 84.000, and there are 80 priests, 12 of whom arc Kikuyus, and 637 catechists.
"The future of the missions depends on the amount of work which can be taken over by lay people." said Bishop Cavallera. His diocese needed teachers, agriculturists. nurses, and other technicians.,. There were some 600 lay teachers in the 200 Catholic schools of the diocese, and he was planning to use Catholic Actionists and Legion of Mary groups to assist the catechetical instruction.
