U.S. COMMUNISTS BANNED FROM THE VOTE

The American Democracy is beginning to realise that its Liberalism does not mean that every citizen is free to do or speak as he likes. The rising patriotic fervour accompanying the American defence programme and the movement to give more and more aid to Great Britain runs pani passu with decisions against Communists.

Two States have recently barred Communists from their ballots. In California the measure has been sent to Governor Olson for his signature. It will not be effective for ninety days, and the Communists will have a place on the ballot in this month's elections.

In Washington State, Communists will also be banned from ballots. " There is sufficient evidence and proof to justify a reasonable conclusion that the Communist party advocates the forceful overthrow of the Government of the United States," said Mr. Smith Troy, Attorney General, when handing the ruling to the Secretary of State.
