FORGIVENESS

SIR,—One thing seems very strange to me now (I miss very few sermons in our church). Since the start of this war with Germany I have never once heard a sermon preached on " Love your enemies." One wonders if that is only a peace-time sermon, that is the reason I am putting this cutting in for you; it is not from a Catholic paper. MRS. ELLIS. 44, Harper Street, Old Trafford, W.C.I6.

[The cuffing on " Forgiveness," by A. D. B., contains the following quotation from Chesterton : — " After nearly two thousand years of Christianity', the only Institution in society that stands peculiarly for forgiveness, the supreme Christian ethic, is still the Christian Church. and thai does not stand for it very well."—EDITOR CH.].
