CLiTON CATHEDRAL in Bristol was the setting for a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit marking a new stage in the history of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
Bishop Philip Pargeter, auxiliary in Birmingham, celebrated the Mass on March 21 to bless the work of the newly formed Western Section of the order.
During the Mass Dr Michael Whelan, Lieutenant of the Order in England and Wales, appointed Sarah Covey as Dame Commander and first President of the Western Section. He also appointed the Right Rev Christopher Budd, Bishop of Plymouth, as Prior and Knight Commander with Star.
The Knights and Dames of the Holy Sepulchre support Christians in the Holy Land through prayers, pilgrimages and financial con tributions. Nearly £1,000 was donated at the Mass to support this work.
The order has about 20,000 members worldwide, and about 500 in England and Wales. It dates to the time of the First Crusade, when the Kingdom of Jerusalem was established.
