Pope to receive Bible on a grain of sand

POPE BENEDICT XVI will be presented with the world’s smallest electronic Bible on a nanochip during his visit to Israel.

When he meets Israel’s President Shimon Peres on May 11 he will receive a 0.5 millimetre chip which contains the entire text of the Hebrew Bible. The nanochip is cutting-edge technology developed at the Israel’s Institute of Technology. Made from silicon it is about the size of a grain of sand.

The Palestinian artist Yasser Abu Saymeh is employing a more ancient technology for the gift that the Holy Father is to receive when he visits Bethlehem on May 13. Pen and ink are the tools with which the Muslim calligrapher will write out the Gospel of St Luke in Arabic on poster-sized pages. The 65-page work of art will also contain illuminations depicting the life of Christ.
