A gift from the 'holy mums' of Nottingham

They have coined a new name for the Union of Catholic Mothers in Lincolnshile. It is "The Holy Mums.' This was related by the retiring president, Mrs. H. V. Hough, w hen she addressed members from all over the diocese in Nottingham last week.

Hundreds of Catholic women were there from Leicestershire, Lincolnshire. Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to see Mrs. Hough present Bishop Ellis with a cheque for £165, a gift for the education of priests for the diocese.

Bishop Ellis spoke of the need for money to pay off the capital debt and to keep up with the heavy running expenses in connection with St. Hugh's College, the junior seminary of the diocese, and announced that another diocesan fete will be held in the summer.

Mrs. Tom Gardner was elected president for the next three years, and Mrs. Hough vice-president. It was announced that seven new branches of the U.C.M. had been formed in the diocese in the past year, and that £65 has been sent to the rest home for mothers at Blackpool.

FIRST ENGLISH CLARETIAN

Fr. Crook's jubilee

The first Englishman to join the Claretian Fathers-the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary-has celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination. He is Fr. Arthur Crook, first assistant to Fr. Emaldia. C.M.F., Superior of the congregation in this country,

The Clarctian Missionaries were founded in Spain by St. Anthony Mary Claret in 1849. Fr. Cook. a convert, entered the first house to be established in England, at Hayes. Middlesex. He was ordained at Segovia, Spain.

He served at Hayes and Loughton and later went to the United States, where he did parish and retreat work for 14 years. On his return to England he became parish priest at Hayes.

Abbess installed

In succession to the late Lady Ambrosia Cousin. 0.S.B.. Lady Bernadette Smeyers was installed last week by Bishop King of Portsmouth as Lady Abbess of St. Cecilia's Abbey. Ryde, Isle of Wight. Among those present, at the ceremony were the Superior General of the Benedictine Congregation at Solesmes. the Abbot of St. Mary's, Quarr, and the Abbot of Prinknash.

Travelling Missions Menei ia. -This week-end the Mission will visit : 11) parish of Denbigh: 12) parish of Milford Haven. Mass at Dale. Next week-end the Mission will visit parish of Burryport; Mass at Pontybum% Southwark.-The Mission will this week visit Marden in the parish of Goudhurst and Matfield in the parish of Tunbridge Wells. Mass will be said on Sunday at South Lodge. Marden, at 8 and at the Village Hall, Matfield, at 10 a.m.

Nottingliam.-The Mission will this week visa Cold Overton. Uppingham. Wing and Krtossington. Mass will be said at Allexion Hall at 8 a.m. at the Rutland Cinema, Uppingham, at 9.30 a.m. and at a place to he announced locally at 11 a.m, Northampton.-Mase will be said on Sunday at Hudson's. Barrow, Suffolk, at 8 a.m., and at Bahlke's, Chapel Hill, Wickhambrook. Suffolk, at 9.30 am. Next week: Monewden and Wickham Market.

Stirewsbury.-Mass will be said on Sunday: Waters Upton at 9 a.m. and at Child's Ercall at a time to he announced later. Next week the Mission will visit the Corve Dale in the parish of Ludlow.

Brenta nod.-Mass will be said on Sunday at Wivenhoe at 8.15 a.m. The place will be announced locally. Next week the Mission will visit Pilgrim's Hatch at Stapleford Abbotts.
