Cardinal gave up Red Hat

THE Sacred Congregation of
Rites in Rome, having now seen the beatification of Pope Innocent XI, is dealing with the beatification causes of two other members of the Odescalchi family—Cardinal Carlo Odescalchi, who died in 1841, and Mgr. Georgic Pietro Odescalchi, Bishop of Vigevano, who died 336 years ago.
Cardinal Odescalchi, son of a Prince of the Roman Empire, was a spiritual adviser of Pope Pius IX when he was a priest, and he ordained the future Pope Leo XI II. He was a friend too of Cardinal Wiseman.
He was Cardinal Bishop of Sabina. For a long time he had wished to join the restored Society of Jesus and eventually, in 1839, he was allowed to resign the Cardinalatial dignity and become a Jesuit.
The Sacred Congregation is also considering the causes of three more Popes. They are Pope Benedict XIII, who died in 1730, Blessed Pope Gregory X, who died in 1276 and Pope Pius IX, the first "Prisoner of the Vatican" after the seizure of Rome in 1870.
