Princess Dona of Spain H.R.H. THE PRINCESS Dona Maria Pia de Saxe-CobugoBraganca, daughter of H.M. King Dom Carlos I, died in Lisbon on 6 May, after a long illness.

Born illegitimate on 13 March, 1907, the day after her birth the King legitimised his daughter by Royal Decree, and she was raised in Madrid as King D. Alfonso's protegee.

The Infanta was intelligent and vivacious, and displayed a talent for art, literature and music at an early age. She composed a number of piano pieces and wrote several books, some under the pseudonym "Hilda de Tolcdano".

After the assassination of the King and his eldest son in 1908, and the death of her half-brother in 1932, D. Maria Pia succeeded as Head of the Royal House of Portugal.

Twice widowed, the duchess is survived by her third husband whom she married in 1985.

Fr Bernard Lagrue

ON TUESDAY 9 May, Father Bernard Lagrue died in hospital where he had been admitted three weeks before.

Having taught Science and R.E. at St Edmund's College, Cambridge, for thirty-five years, Father Bernard retired two years ago, due to ill-health.

He was born in London in. 1922, the eldest son of the family, and was educated at St Ignatius College, Stam-. ford Hill. At the outbreak of the war, he joined the Royal Navy, and became a Radar. Officer in the submarine division.

He was ordained for the Diocese of Westminster in 1952, and spent the next four years at Christ's College, Cambridge, read-: ing Natural Sciences and Astrophysics for his MA and MSc Degrees before being appointed to the staff of St Edmund's College.

Fr John Hathaway FR JOHN HATHAWAY died on 6 May at St John and St Elizabeth Hospital. He had been a priest for 63 years.

Born 29 August, 1908, John Francis Hathaway was one of 10 children, of which two were ordained priests,: , and two became religious sisters.

After being educated at St Ignatius College, Stamford: Hill, he was ordained priest in July 1932.

In 1948 he was appointed to the Parish of St Quintin's Park, using a small hut as a church as the whole area was badly damaged by the war. :

He retired as parish priest in 1979 after 31 years, and lived in a house in the parish, . serving the Carmelite Convent as Chaplain.
