Poll tax priest in court

A LANCASHIRE parish priest has been summoned to appear in court later this month on a charge of non-payment of his poll tax.
Fr Arthur Fitzgerald, of the Twelve Apostles Church, Leigh, has so far refused to pay any of his poll tax bills.
He said this week he was making his stand because of the injustices of the community charge. "One man I know in Leigh earns just too much to qualify for any rebate or assistance, hut the poll tax he is required to pay for himself and his wife is three times his old rates bill.
"What this means is that the couple have just £10 a week for their spending mono."
Fr Fitzgerald, who helped organise a national survey into the effects of the poll tax for the National Conference of Priests, said he would continue to refuse to pay his bill because "although the publicity has cooled, many people are still suffering".
