Based on Jay Parini’s biographical novel of Leo Tolstoy, this Germanmade, English-language films stars Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren as Leo and Sofya Tolstoy, with Anne-Marie Duff as their daughter and her real-life husband James McAvoy as Bulgakov, a naïve private secretary who goes to work for the novelist. Mirren has already won Best Actress at the Rome festival and she and Plummer are up for Baftas and Oscars. Ed West
