ROYAL DEVOTION TO BE REVIVED IN LONDON CATHEDRAL
I N Westminster Cathedral on December 8, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Cardinal Griffin will revive a royal shrine and devotion to Our Lady which hundreds of years ago was centred in a chapel on the site of the Houses of Parliament.
In the centre of the shrine will be a unique 14th century alabaster statue with the new title of Our Lady of Westminster.
The statue, presented by an anonymous donor of " immense generosity," is described in a statement from Westminster Cathedral as unique in the field of English alabaster work—" unique in beauty, unique in the gigantic theme which it symbolises."
Cardinal Griffin has received an autographed letter from the Holy Father giving his personal support and his blessing to the plans for the completion of the Cathedral. (See page 8.) His Holiness speaks of " the majestic Cathedrals of the past which are part of England's glory " and expresses the hope that the deep religious spirit which animated succeeding generations of Catholics will be " an incentive to the faithful of today to crown the labours to which they so willingly set their hands."
