CHANGANACHERRY, INDIA.
Bishop James Kalacherry, of the Syro-Malabar rite Diocese of Changanacherry—the diocese with the largest Catholic population in India, died on October 26 at the age of 57 after heading the see for 22 years. He was only 35 years old and eight years a priest when he was placed at the head of the diocese in 1927. The see numbers 481,156 Catholics Two Archbishops, seven Bishops, an Anglican Bishop and a Jacobite Metropolitan were among those at tending the prelate's funeral. The latter two as well as the Prime Minister of Travancore and Cochin laid wreaths on the prelate's coffin.
