That blessed horse
won the Gold Cup
Power and asked him if he would bless a racehorse he had recently bought.
Mr. Burt was that sort of man; every year, for instance, he would get the parish priest to go round his large farm reciting the Rogation Litanies.
" Bring the horse along," said Canon Power.
The horse was Gay Donald, and when Canon Power saw him he was so full of admiration that he hurried back to the presbytery and put on his Canon's robes for the ceremony.
It happened that it was recreation time at the convent, and in no time Gay Donald was bolding court surrounded by excited girls and nuns.
When the holy water was sprinkled on him. Gay Donald gave first a shiver and then a smart jump.
The day after Christmas Gay Donald ran his first race, at Wincanton.
Alas-he fell at the first fence.
And last week at Cheltenham he was an outsider in the race for the Gold Cup.
But he won-and won easily, leaving Halloween lengths behind.
And who was riding Halloween?
Fred Winter, champion rider over the sticks-a mart who, as CATHOLIC HERALD readers know, is, like the late Mr. Burt. an exemplary Catholic.
This was pretty hard luck. for only the previous day Fred Winter bad won a most exciting race on Clair Soleil to win the Champion Hurdle. and was expected to complete the double by winning the Gold Cup.
Instead of which, that blessed horse Gay Donald won.
Fr. Van Zuyt centre for Camden Town
TWO months after the death of Fr. Albert Van Zuyt, the " Curd of Camden Town," the Belgian Fathers who serve his church of Our Lady of Hal announce that plans are under
way for the building of a Van Zuyt memorial centre on the site of the parish hall.
Thirty years ago the existing hall was the parish Mass centre. After the church was built, it was turned over to its present purpose, But Fr, Van Zuyt had for long been anxious to replace it with a larger and more adequate building, The church debt, the war and subsequent building restrictions forestalled him. And now the hall has been condemned.
It is hoped that work will begin this year. The Centre will provide space for the many clubs and societies attached to the church, for parochial meetings and classes.
The centre's main hall is to be a theatre for plays, concerts and cinema shows, arid a dance hall. The playroom below it. primarily for the Youth clubs, will be suitable for use as a gymnasium. There
will also he two smaller meeting rooms above the hall, a kitchen and canteen, cloakrooms and living accommodation.
Although the parish numbers roughly 2,500. many people from all over London go to the Church of Our Lady of Hal.
On Sunday week, at the Playhouse, Hampstead, there will be a rally and special showing of the film "The-•Little World of Don Camillo." Proceeds will go to the Van Zuyt Centre Fund.
