Catholic resignations still stand
ON the suggestion of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Griffin was provisionally elected an hon. president and other Catholics were elected members at the annual meeting of the Council of Christians and Jews in London on Tuesday.
But on Wednesday the following statement was issued from Archbishop's House, Westminster: "The pr4osal made yesterday to re-elect Catholic members of the Council of Christians and Jews was made without their prior knowledge, and unless and until the difficulties that led to the resignations have been resolved the resignations will remain effective."
Explaining why the Cardinal and the Catholic members resigned last year, Dr. Fisher said: "From the Roman Catholic side there was no failure to appreciate the aims and objects to promote which this council exists, but the Vatican was not satisfied with some of the ways and means adopted by the council in pursuit of those aims."
Discussions are continuing with the Catholic authorities to remove misunderstandings. said Dr. Fisher. When these end, another statement will be possible.
He said that the provisional election of the Cardinal and the Catholic members would take effect only if membership were resumed in the course of the year.
Lay Congress
