Catholic? Lapsed Catholics can be found in abundance. Progressive Catholics. middle-aged and slightly weary, are not entirely extinct. Traditionalist Catholics have more than a little life in them yet. But fiscal Catholics?
At first I thought they might have something to do with Scotland chasubles and
sporrans and so on. But the phrase was put into circulation by the German Nobel prize-winning novelist, Heinrich Buell, and it has a specifically German reference. It means a Catholic who, as an absolute minimum. continues to pay his legal Church Tax.
This (as is of course a rather nasty example. of Church-State co-operation. II puts the official
hall and presbytery. )'heir money comes from the National Catholic Fund, the collections for which last year produced £110,000. Among all the eager outstretched hands "Theology" received £250 while our highly commendable Information Office won the prize with £14,0t10. It was a mild surprise that another national collection (Mass Media) raised £50,000 for that purpose alone.
Fog lies heavy. too, on the principles behind the diocesan situation. My own diocese spent £153,000 in 1972 for general fund purposes. but £363,000 on school building and £223,000 on interest repayment on school building in the same year.
For a diocese which registers nearly a quarter of a million Mass-going Catholics, that's thin
