Dr Bill Boyes, a former GP and honorary medical director of the Middlesbrough diocesan Lourdes pilgrimage, was born on November 7, 1917. He died on November 7, 2006, aged 89.
Dr Bill Boyes, one of the founders of the Middlesbrough diocesan Lourdes pilgrimage and a retired GP, has died on his 89th birthday.
Originally a Methodist, Dr Boyes was received into the Catholic Church in 1946 at Sacred Heart church. Middlesbrough, two years after his marriage to Barbara Wordsworth in York.
Dr Boyes was honorary medical director of the Middlesbrough diocesan Lourdes pilgrimage for 34 of its 53 years and took part in all but two of them, including this year's visit. In recognition of his work for the pilgrimage he was awarded a Papal Knighthood of the Order of St Gregory.
A staunch Catenian and Newman Association member, he was known for his devotion to the faith and to his family at Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Saltbum, where he lived during his retirement.
He is survived by three sons.
