St Gregory the Catholic Herald has three papal knights among its senior managers; the other two being Sir Harold Hood Bt., T.D., and Mr Laurie Tanner, former Grand Secretary of the Catenians.
In presenting Mr Herschan with his knighthood Cardinal Hume said: The Catholic Herald plays an important part in the life of the Church in Britain. It pushes and prods and makes life uncomfortable for people like me and that must be a good thing." In particular he praised John Ryan and Patrick O'Donovan. In all their work, he said, they had never been unkind about anyone.
What else needs to be said? There is a time for joy and hope and this is it. The Herald has always been a challenging paper because it is not afraid to mirror what is going on. If there is confusion in the Church this is the paper which has reported it. When there is light and hope that too is on the front page. It doesn't exist to make money but to serve the cause of Christianity.
