Finlay Currie F INLAY CURRIE, who died last weekend at the

Chalfont and Gerrards Cross Hospital, aged 90, was a Scottish actor best known for his dour and craggy character roles.
A convert and member of the .Catholic Stage Guild, he was last seen on TV in October as the bishop in BBC-1's serial of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables.
Born in Edinburgh, Mr. Currie was an Organist and choirmaster when he made his first stage appearance in his home town in 1898. His London debut followed four years later when he appeared at the South London Music Hall under the name of Harry Calvo, "the double voiced vocalist."
After touring the United States and a decade in Australia as a principal comedian under Sir Benjamin Fuller, he began taking legitimate stage roles in the West End in the early 1930s.
His wife was Maude Courtney, the American actress. The marriage lasted over 50 years until her death in 1959. Their daughter, Nina, died in 1962.
