'Whimsy' out for French priests

THE Assembly of French cardinals and archbishops has stated that French priests should wear a Roman collar and should avoid "Whimsy" when they wear a clerical dark _grey suit.

While Cardinal Feltin, Archbishop of Paris, has already authorised his priests to wear a dark suit and Roman collar instead of the cassock, there is already, the assembly noted, "a tendency to introduce the custom of lay dress. This remains absolutely forbidden, unless there is personal authorisation from the bishop". The assembly also warned that nothing in the liturgy should be changed before the decisions of the ecumenical council have been published.
